I would like this too. I'm using the new client with 2FA but this is not supported. Only when in the inbox can I multi-select.
I believe the browser version should definitely have this function. The app less so.
A dark theme switcher woud be a nice addition. I use dark when it get's darker at night but now by default so a switch button would be very welcome.
I don't need all the extra stuff suggested by Try Two unless it can be achieved with zero impact on page size, load times, ram usage, ...

Be careful who you give your password to, or who you allow to get on your computer/phone.
I would like to customize the layout too. Adjustable columns seem like the most user-friendly sollutions because you don't have to adjust anything if you're fine with it 'as is".
Even though it is possible using the keyboard shortcuts, I would still prefer a bar at the bottom with some formatting options.
Nota sounds great, is easy and doesn't sound as so weird when you're exchanging contact info.
I now have the @tutamail.com which i found the least likely to make people frown.

When everything is moving to online apps and portals, I don't see the need for a desktop application. If there's a certain functionality you're looking for, why not request that addition to the online platform?
