Like LINE! Oh yes! It was needed yesterday. Something Mega promised but didn't get to make yet. Plus audio! Beat them to it. First priority. And some social functions together with it for friends!

To build a new encrypted chat doesn't looks the best ideia. There is some good initiatives already, as some guys pointed out... ..the thing here would be to build some interoperability with other complimentary services.

Please don't do any rework as there is already a great android app based on xmpp and open pgp with end-to-end encryption named Kontalk! You could contact the developers.

XMPP protocol would be good, wouldn't it? Allowing people to use external, compatible apps like mcabber, chatsecure, gajim and so on.

Of course, the web interface should embed OTR, else it's a no-go.

Encrypted chat within tutanota mail, that sounds very good. And could it be also available in mobile?

This would be one the greatest contributions to freedom in our age.

This would be a great function. Also agree with using the Open whispers Textsecure method.

The UI actually looks a lot like Outlook - the currently unused real estate on the far right of the screen in Tutanota is used for listing frequent contacts to chat in Outlook to frequent contacts so assume that space will be used at some point?

If you were to implement this, I would highly advise looking into perfect forward secrecy as seen in Diffie-Helman.

For an existing implementation, you can look at Open Whisper System's TextSecure, which implements the Axolotl protocol for perfect forward secure encrypted asynchronous messaging. Since asynchronous messaging may not be required, you can also look at Off-the-Record Messaging.

    TextSecure: <https://github.com/WhisperSystems/TextSecure/>
    Axolotl: <https://github.com/trevp/axolotl/wiki>
    Off-The-Record: <https://otr.im/>
