  1. Create a desktop application for OS X, Linux, and Windows

Just signed up and -love- the service and simplicity. Very well done, guys!

I have a strong desire to have the SAME application for e-mail on Windows, OS X and Linux, as well as my iPhone and Android devices. I know that's a lot of platforms to support, but if you were able to leverage some of the code behind GitHub's Atom editor (github.com/atom/atom), you might be able to bring a desktop client out for OS X/Windows/Linux much more quickly by leveraging your existing web app.

All things considered however, this is a great service that I really like. Way…

  2. offer a Dark Theme

I strongly prefer "Dark Themes" instead of "Light Themes." Dark themes are much easier on my eyes (especially when using the computer for long periods of time) and also Dark Themes are more energy efficient because light output is reduced.

I use the Gnome-3 dark theme for my Laptop and now that Firefox 35 has arrived the devedition offers a Dark Theme. Would love to have a Dark Theme setting option available in Tutanota as well.

    Dear Monero community,

we are very happy to announce that we have started integrating cryptocurrency support to Tutanota! As a first step, you can now donate to Tutanota with Monero (XMR): https://tutanota.com/community#donate

When you donate to Tutanota with Monero, we will use this donation not only for developing Tutanota, but also for adding Monero as a payment option to Tutanota. Read more on this here: https://tutanota.com/blog/posts/monero-xmr

Thank you very much for your support,
    your Tutanota Team

  4. 2-factor Authentication

Multi-factor authentication is not a luxury anymore, it's a basic necessity for any service that truly puts a high value on privacy.

Our brand-new beta client now supports 2FA with U2F (eg YubiKey) as this is the most secure option and TOTP. More options will follow so let us know which you prefer! :) Please access the new client here: https://mail.tutanota.com/

You can find more details about our new client on our blog: https://tutanota.com/blog/posts/secure-mail-public-beta-release

You can find more details on 2FA in our FAQ: https://tutanota.uservoice.com/knowledgebase/articles/1201942-how-does-two-factor-authentication-2fa-work-in-t

  5. Inbox Rules

Having inbox rules empowers the user to manage their email efficiently and effectively and improves the work flow of the user.
This suggestion is an ability to create user defined rules that handle incoming emails. For example, an email from a defined name, email address or domain gets put in a defined folder or is tagged. Another example would be a rule for auto deletion of emails where an incoming email could be tagged for example as 'Social' or 'Newsletters' and is auto deleted after a defined time period, for example 1 month. Inbox rules would complement a Block List…

Inbox rules are now available to all Premium users!

After an intensive internal discussion we have decided that inbox rules is a feature that only heavy email users need. We hope that you agree with our decision and that you are willing to upgrade. We keep the price for Premium as low as possible so that everyone can afford it: It’s only 1 Euro per month.

In addition to the extra features, you also help us to develop faster and to keep fighting for our privacy online. Thank you very much!

It was more complex than expected, yet, here we are: You can now search for encrypted emails and encrypted contacts within our new beta client: https://mail.tutanota.com/ :) Search takes place locally on your client so that the server does not see any of your search queries. Please find more details on our blog: https://tutanota.com/blog/posts/first-search-encrypted-data

If you like this update, you are very welcome to support our development team by upgrading to Premium (it’s only 1€ per month). For upgrading please click on Premium in the top menu bar while logged in with our old client: https://app.tutanota.com/

    Thank you for your support!
    Your Tutanota Team

Ps: By upgrading you are not only supporting our development team, you are also getting more features including a much more extensive search tool.

  7. Don't rely on gcm for push notifications on Android

Users with no gapps cannot receive real time notifications when a new mail arrives, since google play services and gcm (google cloud messaging) are missing. I suppose the goal using Tutanota is privacy, so being forced to install gapps (and therefore google play services) to receive real time notifications, kind of defeats that purpose.

  8. We need a system for recovery/ reset password

we need a recovery system so incase we lose our password we are able to get our account back and it would make tutanota more reliable and gain more users knowing that if something happens to our account we can recover our email

The account recovery code has been implemented in the new client now. It is only readable/encrypted for the account owner. We can not access it and therefore can’t access your encrypted data.

If you use a second factor, you can’t recover your account by just entering the recovery code. You need two out of three:

    • Your password and your recovery code for resetting second factors
    • Your second factor and the recovery code for resetting your password.

You can only access your recovery code, if you provide your password. If someone has access to your desk, he won’t be able to inspect the recovery code without knowing your password.

If you don’t want to use the recovery code, you don’t have to. But you can’t restore access to your account if you lost your second factor or your password in that case.

  9. Allow user to deselect email preview

Currently when you click on an email Tutanota displays the email for you. However, there is no way to "deselect" the email to hide the contents of the email message. For the sake of privacy, I would like to be able not to show the contents of the email on my screen for people who may be looking over my shoulder.

  10. Plain text email please!

Right now Tutanota seems to send an HTML email, making it hard to send OpenGPG encrypted emails as after copying it inserts spaces between rows.

This makes it exceedingly hard to have encrypted communication with for example users of Countermail email addresses.

  11. Avoid that the contacts are saved automatically

When a message is sent to an e-mail Tutanota or an external mail, contacts are saved automatically.

This is very annoying to be avoided.

  12. Please allow us to remove unwanted Aliases (..or buy more than 5)

We have been waiting for the ability to buy more aliases & now it's finally arrived this feature is severely limited.

Once a user has played with 5 Aliases, they can no longer change their mind & pick different ones.

I understand (although don't agree with) the policy of never recycling usernames. However locking aliases that users no longer want to their accounts is severely penalising your early adopters. We are trying to work our way around a new domain/alias system that has very few help pages created yet.

Please either allow us to remove (not disable) aliases from our…

  13. Enable HSTS - strict HTTPS transport

Tutanota should support HSTS, which tells browsers not to connect over HTTP in the future. This is initially implemented with an HTTPS reply. Tutanota can also submit tutanota.de (or just app.tutanota.de) to be added to a built in list of sites in Chrome, Mozilla, Safari, Opera, and soon IE, once the configuration is stable.

Example reply to include in HTTPS traffic: Strict-Transport-Security: max-age=16070400; includeSubDomains

    Details are available at
    https://www.chromium.org/hsts

Edit: We have made some improvements to custom domain support: Now you can add custom domain users with less than three characters, and you can download the invoice from the app.
    More: https://tutanota.de/blog/posts/release-notes-2-0-5

You are now able to use your own domain for only 1 Euro per month. Simply register: https://app.tutanota.de/#register
and upgrade to premium in Tutanota. When adding your domain email addresses, please click on the user in Settings and add your domain email address as an alias. You can switch the default sender under ‘Email’.

  16. Email Header / Details

It would be great to add an option to enable the view of the email header and details (such as the Received, Return-Path, Thread-, Importance, Message-ID, etc.).

It would be very useful in order to determine if an email is legitimate / know details / make sure it is not a phishing tentative.

  17. An alias system

As a webmail entirely focused on security, a system of aliases would be of use, no doubt.

It would be perfect if it were possible to:
    - receive email to these aliases, without giving the "real" Tutanota address
    - send email via these aliases (via a dropdown menu?)
    - enable the possibility of having one sub-inbox per alias!

With the release of additional domains, we’ll also allow the option to add one alias per account for free.
Simply click under ‘Settings’ → ‘Extensions’ to choose your alias.
Note: Once set, the free alias cannot be changed.

The option to add more than one alias will follow this summer as a paid premium feature.
